Principle #
Managing NAS requires particular attention to the way in which they are backed up and restored in a Cloud DRP model.
There are two things to bear in mind when considering a Nuabee project involving NAS, often used as files server:
- Nuabee does not provide native NAS backup agents (QNAP, Dell, Synology, NetApp, …)
- There is no specific OS for NAS in the Cloud when recovering in disaster recovery mode.
As for the possible exposure of file-sharing services (NFS or SMB), these cannot be backed up directly, nor can their parameters: it is therefore imperative to have these listed in order to enable PRA reconstruction.
SMB file-sharing solution #
NAS are backed up from a Windows or Linux server with a Nuabee Backup agent installed, with data backed up across the network via mount points accessed by a service account.
- Each NAS Share results in a mount point on the server backing up the NAS.
- These mount points are rebuilt as virtual hard disks as part of the Cloud DRP.
The rebuilt server will have the same IP address as the original NAS, to make it easier for users to reconnect.
Note: this type of solution also works in the context of a file server on a SAN, as long as it can be accessed via the SMB protocol.
NTFS permissions management #
Depending on how NTFS rights are structured on the share, their reconstruction may be partial or require specific actions.
